The most interesting of the Aeolian Islands, situated in the extreme eastern arch of the archipelago, between Panarea and the Tyrrhenian coast,only 55 km from Capo Vaticano. Bathing and fishing village overlooking the sea in a picturesque location along the coast of St. Euphemia’s gulf. Collegiate Churhc of St. George, the church has a Baroque prospectus and inside preserves inter alia, a seventeenth-century wooden crucifix and some statues of the sixteenth century, in particular the Madonna and Child and St. Catherine’s circle of Gagini and a S.Giovanni Battista attributed to Pietro Bernini. In the castle built by Ferdinand I of Aragon in late 1400, Gioacchino Murat was shot in 1815 after the failed attempt to recapture the kingdom of Naples.
